Former PBA Import Arrested

Former Rain or Shine PBA import, Jamelle Cornley, was arrested after he allegedly damaged hotel properties and assaulted a police officer.

According to initial reports, Cornley causes a commotion at Sir Williams Hotel when he learned that the girls that he invited in his hotel room was gone together with his $1600 in cash. Cornley's outrage at the hotel lobby resulted to an estimated P 200,000 damaged in property.

The hotel management called on the police to control the PBA star's outrage. However, when Police Officers Lazatin and PO2 Daang tried to arrest him, Lazatin was punched in the head causing him to become unconscious. Lazatin was later rushed to the hospital.

Cornley is now detained at Kamuning Police Station.

Azkals Won Over Cambodia 8-0

The Philippine Azkals held a commanding 6-0 lead against Cambodia in their AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers match last night when match officials suspended play in the second half due to the heavy downpour that flooded the Rizal Memorial pitch. Referee Gamini Nivon Robesh of Sri Lanka halted the action with 30 minutes left in the match after rains turned the field made out of natural grass into an artificial lake. At presstime, officials are studying whether to resume the match last night or move the conclusion of the action today. Prior to the suspension, the Azkals were completing their dominance of the hapless Cambodian side with Phil Younghusband setting the tone with his second career hat trick. Younghusband, who was coming off an inconsistent showing in the AFF Suzuki Cup, delivered a trio of sensational scores in the 25th, 31st and 34th minutes to stretch his number of international goals to 31. Midfielder Stephan Schrock, playing his first match on home soil since 2011, scored a curling shot a minute into the second half while Fil-Spaniard Javier Patiño debuted in style with goals in the 45th and 57th minutes. Gag Order Issued To Kris Aquino and James Yap

A Makati Regional Trial Court on Friday issued a gag order over court proceedings involving ex-couple actress-TV host Kris Aquino and basketball star James Yap.

Judge Liza Marie Picardal-Tecson of Makati Regional Trial Court branch 144 issued the gag order after the hearing of Yap's petition for a hold departure order prohibiting the Queen of All Media from bringing their son, James Jr. (popularly known as Bimby), outside of the country.

The gag order bans the former couple from discussing the merits of HDO petition as well as other cases involving both parties filed in same court.

Yap sought for the HDO when he learned that Kris plans to bring Bimby to Europe for a vacation during the weekends.

Before Yap filed the HDO petition, the court granted Kris' Temporary Protection Order (TPO) last March 15, the same day it was filed.

The TPO mandates Yap to stay away from his son, Kris, and any household member at a safe distance of at least 100 meters. The order includes Kris' residence, place of work, and their son's school. The TPO expires April 13.

Pope Francis warned on Thursday that the troubled Catholic Church risked becoming little more than a charity with no spiritual foundations if it failed to undergo renewal.

The 76-year-old Argentinian told the cardinals who elected him as Latin America’s first pope that the Church could “end up a compassionate NGO.”

“I would like all of us after these days of grace to have the courage to walk in the presence of the Lord,” Francis said in his first mass, amid the splendor of the Sistine Chapel.
He warned the cardinals against “the worldliness of the Devil.”

“Walking, building and confessing are not so easy. Sometimes there are tremors,” the pope said, in a homily that will be scrutinized for clues to the style of his leadership.
The new head of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, who was formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had begun his reign by meeting people in Rome and laying a bouquet of flowers in homage to the Virgin Mary in a basilica.

The pope also prayed at the altar of St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order to which he belongs.

He returned to the priests’ quarters where he stayed before the conclave and settled his own bill.
The election of the son of an Italian emigrant railway worker, who was considered a rank outsider, was met with widespread surprise and expressions of hope for change in a Church riven by scandal and internal conflict.

His elevation was also seen as recognition of the Church’s power in Latin America, which now accounts for 40 percent of the world’s Catholics, while it is in decline in Europe.

“The choice of Bergoglio shows that the Church is determined not to remain in mourning for the crisis in Europe but has opened its doors to the revitalizing energy of Catholicism’s biggest continent,” Vatican expert Luigi Accatoli told AFP.

Pope’s Final Public Blessing

Over 200,000 people gathered at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City on Sunday to hear Pope Benedict XVI final public blessing before he retires.

“The Lord is calling me to ‘climb the mountain,’ to devote myself to prayer and meditation,” the Pope told the crowd as he appeared at the window of his apartment overlooking the square.

“But this does not mean abandoning the Church. If God is asking me to do this, it is so because I can continue to serve the Church with the same dedication and the same love, with which I have done thus far, but in a way that is better suited to my age and my strength,” the Pope said.
“Thank you for your affection,” he added.

Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world earlier this month with the announcement he would step down as head of the Catholic Church on February 28 due to old age and failing health.


“I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant,” Vatican Radio quoted the Pope, who is 85, as saying in a declaration.

“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” he said.

Cyber hacking diverts money to hacker's account

The Department of Trade and Industry Region 10 is warning entrepreneurs of the ongoing and increasing cases of cyber hacking especially on the import and export transactions of Filipino importers and Chinese suppliers.

Linda O. Boniao, officer-in-charge of Department of Trade and Industry Region 10 said that these cases of cyber hacking usually divert Filipino importers’ payments to the hacker’s bank account.

Further, she said, the Embassy’s economic team in Beijing has already met with the officials of China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Criminal Investigation Department (ICD) particularly their cyber crime investigation officers to discuss on these reported cases. So far, there have been six cases reported to the Philippine Embassy in China by Filipino victims, Boniao revealed.

According to the report, there are three variations of these instances. One involves a Filipino importer and a Chinese supplier with the former’s final transaction payment diverted to the hacker’s account in China. The second involves a Filipino importer and a Chinese supplier, with the former’s payment diverted to the hacker’s account outside China. And the third type involves a Filipino importer and a non-Chinese supplier, with the former’s payment ending up in the hacker’s bank account in China.

Through investigation, Chinese officials have been able to trace the perpetrators to Africans, specifically, Nigerians, said Boniao.

Chinese findings are further confirmed by the National Bureau of Investigation here, she added. In a similar set-up between Filipino importer and Chinese supplier, they were able to trace the deceptive email directing the Filipino importer to deposit the payment in the hacker’s account, to Nigeria.

Boniao explained that MPS authorities can easily freeze bank accounts in China, if they are subject to criminal complaint. However, this is not easy in other countries as it will require court order. She added that Chinese officials cannot assist if hacker’s bank account is outside China for lack of jurisdiction.

In the end, Boniao said that the most effective means of preventing cyber hacking menace is for entrepreneurs to be vigilant about the occurrence of such crime. (JMOR-PIA10)

State Of Emergency Declared in Davao Del Norte

Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario has declared a State of Emergency in the province due to the continuous rains and flood that has inundated the province for several days now.

“The province is practically under the water for four days now so I have declared a state of emergency,” del Rosario said.

The declaration included the suspension of classes in the elementary and high school department in all municipalities Monday, he said, excluding the three cities.

A report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (PDRRMC) shows that as of 9:15 a.m. of January 21, a total of 9,425 families comprising 39,037 families have been evacuated in the province.

Majority or 5,596 families and 18,752 individuals were evacuated in the municipality of Kapalong where flooding is at its worst. Up to 3,201 families comprising 16,005 individuals have been evacuated in the municipality of Carmen.

A total of 623 families including 3,115 individuals have been evacuated in the municipality of Asuncion while five families with 25 individuals have been evacuated in Sto. Tomas. New Corella, which has not been included in the list of flooded municipalities before, had 228 families and 1,140 individuals evacuated.

PDRRMC reports show that Barangay Sagayen in Asuncion and Purok 1 in Florida, Kapalong are still passable to all types of vehicles. Bgy. Pagsabangan continue to be passable but not for motorcycles and low vehicles since most areas here including the cemetery are half submerged in floodwaters.

Barangays that were reported not passable as of yesterday included Bgy. San Miguel via Campo Kuatro, Dujali-Mampising, Miranda Bridge, Talomo-Salvacio and San Vicente-Esperanza.

A total blackout has been reported in Kapalong for two days now and in Asuncion, while partial blackout was reported in Mankilam, Tagum City.

One person who was reported missing in Bgy.Sonlon in Asuncion has not yet been found as of Monday while PDRRMC reported that Dodong Licomes from Bgy. Maniki in Kapalong has been injured due to electrocution.(RGA/LAC/PIA-XI)

Phl records all-time high influx of business missions

The unparalleled record of inbound business missions to the Philippines this year manifests the strong confidence of foreign investors in the country’s business environment, the DTI said.

“Consistent with positive reviews of international rating agencies on the Philippines, this influx of business missions is a strong affirmation of the Aquino administration’s economic reforms that have resonated prominently to foreign investors worldwide,” Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Cristino L. Panlilio said in a statement.

The Board of Investments (BOI) recorded a total of 487 inbound business corporation visits from January to October 2012. These missions are composed of 147 individual company visits and 34 multi-company delegation missions, where each mission is composed of at least 5 corporations’ executives, according to the DTI.

To date, inbound business mission for this year increased by 56.6 percent from last year’s 311 inbound mission. There is also an increase in multi-company delegations, which rose to 112.5 percent from a total of 18 last year to 34 in 2012.

Panlilio noted that the increase in inbound business missions can be attributed to the revival of interest of markets such as United Kingdom, France and Canada, and the growing interest coming from non-traditional markets like Russia, Europe (particularly, Turkey), Middle East (namely, Oman, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi), and Africa (particularly, Nigeria).

“Traditional markets such as Japan, US, Taiwan, and Korea remained a major source of foreign investor visits,” Panlilio added.

These inbound mission’s sectors of interest are information technology–business process outsourcing (IT-BPO), power including green energy, infrastructure or public-private partnership projects, tourism, agribusiness and aquaculture, and manufacturing of aerospace parts, electronics, garments and textiles, steel, machineries, automotive, shipbuilding, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

The BOI also recorded a total of 13 outbound missions and four Presidential state visits this year. President Benigno S. Aquino III led three of these state visits, which include: United Kingdom (UK) and US that brought back at least 2.5 billion dollars in investments last June, New Zealand and Australia that pitched investment opportunities in the Philippines last October, and Cambodia to attend the ASEAN Business Advisory Council meeting during the ASEAN Summit last November. For the fourth and recent state visit to India to keynote the ASEAN-India Business Fair and Forum and meet with executives of Indian companies and leaders of a trade organization in the Indian software industry during the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay represented President Aquino.

Last year, there were 18 outbound mission conducted. Out of this number, 13 were BOI-led missions and five are Presidential state visits.

This year’s 13 outbound missions were in Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Australia, and Cambodia. The areas of interests are maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, electricity generation and transmission, hydropower power, tourism, energy, e-vehicle, agro-business, shipbuilding, business process outsourcing (BPO), duty free shops, and investments in economic zones and in Mindanao.

“In 2013, we expect this trend to continue with numerous investor queries and requests for assistance in the conduct of our due diligence activities. We are also anticipating a considerable increase in realized investment projects with value propositions from the industry roadmaps developed this year,” Panlilio said. (DTI)

7 Dies in Christmas Day Tragedy

Tragedy struck a family on Christmas Day when fire broke out in a row of apartment units owned by a veterinarian in Quezon City, killing the animal doctor and six members of his household.
Senior Superintendent Aderson Comar, assistant regional director for operations of the Bureau of Fire Protection-National Capital Region (BFP-NCR), said that fire brokeout at about 5:24 a.m. in the row of apartment units owned by the family of veterinarian Dr. Carlos Filamor Sr. on Rest Haven Street in Barangay Bungad.

At the time of the fire, Senior Fire Officer 3 Jose Felipe Arreza said that there were seven persons inside the unit occupied by Dr. Filamor, including himself. With him are his wife Korina, 50; their two children, Carlos Jr., 25, and Eva, 26; Eva’s two sons, Miguel Andrei Mutuc, 13, and Mateo Aaron Mutuc, 14; and the family housemaid Marina Ayon, 48. All the victims were burned beyond recognition and investigators may resort to dental recognition to identify the recovered remains.
Apart from the victims’ bodies, investigators also found a burned dog and cat at a veterinary clinic owned by Dr Filamor.

The Filamors occupy one unit of the row of 16 apartment units. Its only two windows have steel grills.

Comar said two bodies were found in each of the two entrance doors of the Filamor unit located within the compound.

The other bodies were found in a room on the second floor, one in the kitchen, one in the ground floor comfort room, and one in the living.

Quezon City Deputy Fire Marshall Samuel Tadeo said that the seventh body was found at around before 2 p.m. yesterday at Unit 16-B, located two units from the Filamor’s. Tadeo said the seventh body could be that of Carlos Jr., a special child, who jumped out from a second floor window.

SC upholds OFW law

The Supreme Court (SC) en banc has upheld the portion of Republic Act 8042 (the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995) covering “illegal recruitment” earlier struck down as unconstitutional by a Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC).

In a 17-page decision penned by Justice Roberto Abad, the court declared Sections 6, 7, 9, and the last sentence of the second paragraph of Section 10 of RA 8042 “valid and constitutional.”
Section 6 defines the crime of “illegal recruitment” and enumerates the acts constituting the same. Section 7 provides the penalties for prohibited acts. Section 9 of the law allows the filing of criminal actions arising from “illegal recruitment” before the RTC of the province or city where the offense was committed or where the offended party actually resides at the time of the commission of the offense. Finally, the last sentence of the second paragraph of Section 10 holds the corporate directors, officers, and partners of recruitment and placement agencies jointly and solidarily liable for money claims and damages that may be adjudged against the latter agencies.

The court found “illegal recruitment” as defined in Section 6 of RA 8042 clear and unambiguous. “By its terms, persons who engage in ‘canvassing, enlisting, contracting, transporting, utilizing, hiring or procuring workers’ without the appropriate government license or authority are guilty of illegal recruitment whether or not they commit the wrongful acts enumerated in that section. On the other hand, recruiters who engage in the canvassing, enlisting, etc. of (overseas Filipino workers or OFWs), although with the appropriate government license or authority, are guilty of illegal recruitment only if they commit any of the wrongful acts enumerated in Section 6,” the court held.

In fixing uniform penalties, as provided for in Section 7, for each of the enumerated acts under Section 6, the court ruled that “Congress was within its prerogative to determine what individual acts are equally reprehensible” consistent with the state policy of according full protection to labor and deserving of the same penalties. Reiterating People v. Ventura, it held that “the State under its police power may prescribe rules and regulations as in its judgment will secure or tend to secure the general welfare of the people, to protect them against the consequence of ignorance and incapacity as well as of deception and fraud.”

24 Areas Under Signal Number 3

Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) made landfall over Baganga town in Davao Oriental before 5 a.m. Tuesday, even as 24 areas were placed under Storm Signal No. 3.

 

PAGASA forecaster Bernie de Leon said the typhoon did not immediately weaken upon landfall but may do so as it interacts with the land mass.

 

"Nag-landfall ito 4:45 a.m. sa Baganga," de Leon said in an interview on dzBB radio.

 

He said 27 mm of rain (heavy) had been recorded in the first three hours of Tuesday.

 

De Leon said the typhoon's path may include Agusan del Sur, Misamis Oriental, Siquijor, Negros Oriental, Sulu Sea, then exit via Palawan as early as Thursday night.

 

As of 4 a.m., PAGASA said Typhoon Pablo was estimated at 40 km east of the eastern coast of Davao Oriental, with maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kph.

 

It said Typhoon Pablo was moving at 26 kph and is expected to be 180 km southwest of Roxas City by Wednesday morning.

 

By Thursday morning it is expected to be 230 km northwest of Puerto Princesa City. By Friday morning it is expected to be 780 km west of Metro Manila.

Philex spill ‘biggest mining disaster’ in PHL, surpassing Marcopper – DENR

After months of recurring leakages, the Philex mine spill in Benguet has become the “biggest mining disaster” in the Philippines in terms of volume, but the company is seeking a clean-up option instead of paying the hefty fine of P1 billion, officials said.

Some 20 million metric tons of sediments have flowed into water channels from the Philex tailings pond in Itogon since its drainage tunnel was breached last August, according to a report from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (MGB-DENR).

This is ten times more than the volume of mine tailings that spilled out of the Marcopper mine in 1996 in Marinduque, which dumped some two million metric tons of waste into the Boac River and is still considered the worst mining disaster in terms of toxicity. Residents along the 27-kilometer Boac River lost their fishing livelihood and diseases have afflicted the community after the incident.

“In terms of volume, ito [Philex mine tailings spill] ngayon ‘yung biggest mining disaster in the Philippines,” MGB chief Leo Jasareno told GMA News Online in an exclusive interview last Friday.

Sandigan Bayan Allows Arroyo in Hospital Arrest

For humanitarian considerations, the Sandiganbayan First Division granted the hospital arrest of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who was charged with plunder in connection with the alleged misuse of P366-million Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) funds.

In its eight-page resolution, the anti-graft court said it granted the hospital arrest in view of the physical condition of Mrs. Arroyo and her need to undergo continuing intensive physical therapy three times a week at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) and on account of the withdrawal of the prosecution of its opposition to the urgent motion.

Earlier, Prosecutor Disodado V Calonge manifested that the prosecution was already withdrawing its opposition to the urgent motion of the accused for hospital arrest.

The resolution was signed by Justice Efren dela Cruz, First Division chairperson, and Justices Rodoldo A. Ponferrada and Rafael R Lagos.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Arroyo thanked her supporters, well-wishers and even the Sandiganbayan in a message posted on the social network “Tweeter” before the anti-graft court ordered her barred from using computers and other telecommunications devices while under hospital arrest.

Through her staff, Mrs. Arroyo “tweeted” “thank you’s” to those who greeted her and offered prayers for her swift recuperation. Her staff also extended thanks for the Sandiganbayan’s order granting her motion for hospital arrest.

The anti-graft court allowed Mrs. Arroyo to be detained at the same hospital suite at the VMMC where she was previously held following her arrest on an election offense last year.

Kris Aquino Cancels Movie With Vice

KRIS Aquino confirmed that she had backed out of the movie “Sisteraka,” an official entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).


A joint production of Star Cinema and Viva Films, “Sisteraka” also stars Aquino’s friend Vice Ganda.

Aquino, who is hosting the morning show “KrisTV,” said via Twitter that she will no longer do the movie due to health reasons. She will be replaced by comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas in the movie.

“I didn’t want to talk about work this weekend. But YES it’s true I backed out of the MMFF movie with Vice Ganda. If you remember I lost my voice the other week and I realized I can’t possibly work seven days a week and not have all my projects suffer,” Aquino tweeted.

“In the past, my talk show was always the one that suffered because of my ‘acting’ dreams. More than anything else, I am a talk show host and I can’t be effective with no voice,” Aquino added.

Aquino added that she is also doing the series “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw” with Anne Curtis and Robin Padilla.
“Our teleserye ‘Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw’ has a story so close to my heart, about a family, about sisters and what toll cancer takes not just for the victim but for all those she loves. I made difficult choices but I have peace in my heart. Growing up means accepting I’m not superwoman, and realizing just how blessed I am to have what’s here and now,” Aquino said.

Aside from her soap and morning show, Aquino is also set to return to the judges’ table for the new season of “Pilipinas Got Talent,” which starts in October

Neck-deep floods force Marikina, QC residents to evacuate, flee to rooftops

More than 700 families from Bgy. Bagong Silangan in Marikina were forced into evacuation centers, while residents of Bgy. Kristong Hari in Quezon City had to flee to their rooftops as incessant torrential rains inundated many parts of Metro Manila on Tuesday.

Ivan Mayrina reported on the GMA-7 program Unang Hirit that 763 families crowded into Bgy Bagong Silangan's covered courts due to mandatory evacuation in the area.

Because of the floods, the local government had to open four classrooms at the Bagong Silangan Elementary School, and has converted the community church and public market into additional evacuation centers.

The barangay was one of the worst affected areas due to its proximity to the Marikina River, where the water level has reached more than 19.3 meters as of 8:55 am.

Residents have described the water level as "abot bewang" or waist-high, and have also reported that the local foot bridge is now underwater.

Due to the rush in evacuating residents, most of them were unable to bring basic necessities and have asked for food, clothing, and beds.

Kris Aquino Defends PNoy via Twitter

Despite of too much criticism from the media, Kris Aquino remains firm in defending her brother President Noynoy.  PNoy was criticized after a 'scolding spree' at the recent anniversary celebration of ABS-CBN TV Patrol.

Like most of celebrities, Kris pours out her sentiments via twitter (kris aquino twitter) when a follower commented that PNoy “would give media freedom” similar to what their father, Benigno Aquino, Jr., “would’ve wanted,” noting that the former senator himself was part of the press (he worked as a war correspondent for the Manila Times).

Kris replied by tweeting:

“@NinaBellatrix1 hi Nina. Prayed be4 I replied to make sure I don't tweet the wrong thing. My issues r so trivial in comparison to PNoy. PNoy is our president & I do believe the majority of our people feel he's doing a great job. Maybe he just like anybody else has the right to defend himself & express his opinion? Freedom of speech is a 2 way street right?”

However, another netizen commented that though PNoy has a right to defend himself, “it was just inappropriate for the occasion. It was uncalled for.”

To which Kris responded, “that's y we live in a DEMOCRACY. Our president is free to express himself & so r u. Good night.”

PNoy was the guest of honor at the of the long-running Kapamilya news program.  Although he did not directly name his subject, PNoy did refer to him as a government official who served for six years. He also quoted Noli’s famous line, “Magandang gabi, bayan” at one point.

Noli De Castro serves as the vice-president of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo from 2004 to 2010.

In a news article from ABS-CBN it reported that Kris Aquino had consulted a fortune teller while she was in Thailand.  According to the fortune teller Kris said that she will have a boyfriend on December, 2012 and they will eventually get married on April 20, 2013.


There were no reports if Kris' future love affair will be to a politician, businessman or an actor.

Aside from her love life, the fortune teller also foretold that Kris will have a long life and will reach up to the age of 85 or 92.

Ex-President Arroyo Is Out Of Jail

Wearing a neck brace to support her spine that is weakened from a rare disease, Arroyo left a tightly guarded military hospital in Manila where she had been awaiting trial on the charge that could see her jailed for life.

The granting of bail appeared a major setback for her successor, Benigno Aquino, who has said that bringing Arroyo to justice for crimes she allegedly committed while in power is crucial to his high-profile anti-graft campaign.

Aquino won the 2010 presidential elections in a landslide after campaigning to wipe out corruption that he said crippled Philippine society during the nearly 10 years Arroyo was in power.
Arroyo's spokesman, Ferdinand Topacio, described the ruling on Wednesday morning from a Manila court as "a triumph of justice and a resounding denial of dictatorship" that proved her earlier assertions of innocence.

"It is a reaffirmation of what our camp has been saying all along," Topacio said, before borrowing from a quote by former US president Abraham Lincoln.

"That the charges against the former president are as thin as the soup made from boiling the shadow of a chicken that has been starved to death."

Arroyo, 65, was arrested at an exclusive hospital in November last year shortly after immigration authorities blocked her at Manila airport from leaving the country.

Aquino had said Arroyo was trying to flee the country to escape imminent charges against her, although she said she needed specialist treatment overseas for her spinal disease.

Arroyo was charged shortly after with "electoral sabotage" for allegedly conspiring with a feared political warlord to rig the 2007 senatorial elections.

She was then transferred to the military hospital, where she had been detained while awaiting trial. No date has yet been set for the start of the trial, which could take years to complete.

Coach Tim Cone Fined P23K

PBA FINALS 2012 - Tim Cone Throws a Chair

B-Meg coach Tim Cone apparently has gotten away with a slap on the wrist after being fined a total of P23,400 for throwing a chair on the court while the game was ongoing during Game 1 of their PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven title series with Rain or Shine last Sunday.

He was assessed P20,000 for the more serious offense of throwing the chair, and P3,400 for a technical foul resulting from that outburst.

The incident – perhaps the first of its kind in the league – took place at 7:23 mark of the payoff period.

A similar outburst by popular US NCAA basketball coach Bobby Knight resulted in a one-game suspension and two years probation from the Big 10 conference in 1985.

Known for his outburst, tongue-lashing and combative mood towards the referees when protesting a call or a ‘no call,’ Cone flung a chair while action was ongoing after he thought his player James Yap was fouled while driving to the basket.

Rain or Shine went on to win Game 1 of the best-of-seven series, 91-80.

Cone apologized for his rant, saying: “Our guys are hit on the testicles. I tried to tell the refs but it fell on deaf ears. I made a mistake. I let my frustrations get over me. But at some point you have to make a statement.

Persons with disabilities find work online

Persons with disabilities (PWDs) have found suitable means of earninga living on the internet.

Differently-abled graphic artist head, Darlito Palermo, engineer, said his organization established by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has paved way for about 50 PWDs in Davao City to work online, earning as much as P30,000 a month.

Palermo viewed online jobs as suitable for PWDs who need not go to workplaces which, mostly, have yet to establish accessible features such as ramps.

“The can work at home. They don’t need to go out, commute, and go to work in establishments which are not accessible,” he said.

PWDs are now working online for companies based in Singapore, Netherlands, the United States, Australia, and other developed countries, rendering services as virtual assistants, web designers, content writers, data encoder, remote PC assistant, among others.

Totally blind, 25-year-old Maricel Fornis of Sasa, Davao City shared her experiences working online during the Career and Employment Advocacy held Wednesday at SM City Annex in observance of the 34th National Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

Fornis said she lost her sight in a vehicular accident in February 2002, but she rose from the misfortune by training for online work.

She now serves as the virtual secretary of an executive director of a company based in Singapore. She arranges flight summaries, book hotels, coordinate meetings, and prepare documents for visa applications of her employer.

She views online work as beneficial to PWDs who would be spared from the hazards of mobile barriers because they only have to stay at home and work on their internet-connected personal computers. Working online makes them save expenses for transportation and fuel, she said.

Fornis also shared information about the values and attitudes which had help her stay long in online work. She said one must be determined, resourceful, initiative, conscious about the importance of global services and must be result-oriented.

“Gikinahanglan ang right attitude. Dali lang tun-an ang computer pero dili ang right attitude. Apan ang right attitude ang gikinahanglan kaayo. (Right attitude is needed. It is easy to learn how to use the computer but not the right attitude which is the most important),” she said.

Meanwhile, 30-year old orthopedic Gil V. Alfeche of Sasa, Davao City is now working as a quality control assurance officer of an English online tutorial company based in Singapore.

Recalling his quest for a job, he said he used to repair cellphone services, among other odd jobs after dropping from college as a graduating student of computer engineering of the University of Mindanao.

Because of his desire to look for jobs online, he borrowed money from friends just to buy his own computer unit and connected to the internet. That started opening up fortunes for him.

“Dili lang jud ta mawad-an ug paglaum. (Let’s not lose hope),” he said. (source JA-PIA 11)

Ex-President Charged With Another Plunder Case

The Office of the Ombudsman on Monday filed plunder charges against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and nine other former state officials, mostly of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), for allegedly misusing P365,997,915 in PCSO funds.

It was the first plunder case against Arroyo who is under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for electoral sabotage during the 2007 senatorial election.

Also named respondents in the 10-page complaint filed before the Sandiganbayan are former PCSO General Manager Rosario Uriarte, Assistant General Manager for Finance Benigno Aguas, and former PCSO board members Sergio Valencia, Manuel Morato, Raymon Roquero, Maria Fatima Valdez and Jose R. Taruc V.

Former Commission on Audit (COA) Chairman Reynaldo Villar and COA Region 5 head Nilda Plaras were also named in the complaint.

PCSO Director Aleta Tolentino earlier said the COA officials were included because of their “conspiracy and connivance.”

No bail was recommended for the accused, said the Sandiganbayan.

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales approved the plunder case.

Based on the information filed by the Ombudsman, Arroyo and her nine co-accused conspired and connived to acquire ill-gotten wealth from the PCSO from January 2008 to June 2010.

Morales underscored the evidence that indicated Uriarte wrote to Arroyo eight times requesting that she be allowed to draw from the agency’s intelligence fund.

The money to be drawn from the fund was supposed to have been used “to monitor the PCSO’s charitable activities and projects; to buy information to determine if the funds were being used for the purposes for which [they] were intended; to fund an investigation of how medicine given to beneficiaries marked “Botika ng Masa” had ended up in commercial markets, and to counter various scams victimizing lotto bettors and winners.”

Morales earlier filed a graft case against Arroyo in connection with the $329-million national broadband (NBN) deal with China’s ZTE.

Dolphy Dies At Age 83

Rodolfo Quizon Sr. or better known as "Dolphy" passed away Tuesday at 8:34 p.m., at the Makati Medical Center (MMC).  In a report issued by the MMC to the media, Dolphy's cause of death is "multiple organ failure secondary to complications brought about by severe pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute renal failure."

Dolphy was born in July 25, 1928 in Calle Padre Herrera (now P. Herrera St.) of Tondo, Manila. His father was Melencio Quizon, the son of Modesto Quizon and Adorable Quizon (née Espinosa) and a ship engine worker in the Atlantic Gulf and Pacific Company of Manila . His mother was Salud Quizon (née Vera), the daughter of Maximo Vera and Ninay Vera (née de la Rosa). He was the second eldest of ten children.


Dolphy sold peanuts and watermelon seeds at movie theaters as a boy, which enabled him to watch movies for free. He was about thirteen when World War II started. He did odd jobs including shining shoes; attaching buttons at a pants factory; sorting bottles by size; working as a stevedore at the pier; trading; and driving calesas. In his free time he regularly watched stage shows at the Life Theater and the Avenue Theater. His favorite performers included the comedy duo Pugo and Togo, and the dancers Benny Mack and Bayani Casimiro.


He started performing onstage during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Dolphy was turning 17 when Benny Mack got him a job as a chorus dancer for a month at the Avenue Theater and subsequently on the Lyric Theater. He also appeared in shows at the Orient Theater. Golay was his first stage name. During air raids, they would interrupt the show and run for the air-raid shelter in the orchestra section together with the audience. If no bombs exploded, the show resumed.

PBA Star Fined 500,000 for Tweeting

Basketball Star Don Allado was fined for PHP 500,000 and is suspended to play for the entire conference by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).  Don Allado accused the PBA of game fixing in his "tweets" after their team, Barako Bull Energy loss the game.

Allado's controversial tweets:

“In my opinion, this league has little credibility left.”

“They control who is in & who is out.”

“#PBA games are fixed.”

He later then removed his tweets and went to PBA Commissioner Chito Salud to apologized.  

In an interview with dzBB, Commissioner Salud  said "Ang tweet, Facebook, maraming sumusunod diyan, delikado kung magsasalita ka ng kung anu-anong bagay."

"I took the occasion na ipaalala sa kanya ang responsibilidad ng PBA player sa fans. Ang maturity, sportsmanship, kailangan at all times they observe that on and off the court," Salud further added.

"Clearly it [Allado's tweets] was an outburst of emotion in the heat of competition," Salud concluded.

Don Allado is a former King Archer out of De La Salle University, and begins his career in Alaska Aces in 1999. A three-time PBA All-Star and two-time PBA champion, the 6'6" center/power forward is with his fifth team, and has career averages of 7.89 points, 5.86 rebounds and 1.29 assists.

SYNOPSIS: At 2:00 p.m. today, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 250 km Northwest of Iba, Zambales (17.6°N, 118.8°E).

FORECAST: The whole country will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over the Western section of Luzon which may trigger flash floods and landslides. Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest to south will prevail over Northern Luzon and the coastal waters along this area will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the south to southwest with slight to moderate seas.

Binay Rallies Local Officials In Fight Against Illegal Recruitment

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay has urged local government officials to help the national government fight illegal recruitment and human trafficking.

Binay, concurrent chairman emeritus of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking and chairman of the Presidential Task Force Against Illegal Recruitment, noted that local officials are the first to know if there are cases of illegal recruitment and human trafficking in their area.

"Local government officials know their surroundings better. So I'm asking their support to fight this menace especially in the provinces,” he said in a statement.

Binay had also urged the public to report to authorities suspected transit homes of illegal recruitment and human trafficking syndicates.

“If you notice that some strangers are renting out an empty house in your neighborhood and filling it up with women, then please get in touch with us. We need the public’s help and cooperation to fight human trafficking,” Binay said.

On the other hand, the Vice President asked those who are planning to work abroad to inquire with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) first to make sure that the jobs are legitimate.

Brownout in Metro Manila Looms

Saying the Luzon power is experiencing “deficiency” in supply, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Friday warned its customers in Metro Manila and nearby provinces of possible rotating brownouts in the coming days.

Dina Lomotan, Meralco’s corporate communications manager, said the company has received an advisory from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) that it has raised the “yellow alert” for the grid.

The NGCP spokesperson, Cynthia Alabanza, said the Luzon grid went on yellow alert on Thursday. “This means that while power plants in the Luzon grid can still meet the demand of consumers, our (power) reserve is quite thin,” Alabanza explained.

She said the reserve had hit 300 megawatts, half of the ideal 647 megawatts.

The Power Situation Outlook posted on the NGCP’s website on Friday left blank the system capacity, system peak and reserve levels for the Luzon grid.

Figures on the website are usually updated daily.

Lomotan said it would be best for Meralco customers to start conserving electricity at home or at commercial establishments.

“We should still save electricity since we’re on yellow alert. We have a low reserve. Hopefully no power plant will go offline, or else the reserve will get wiped out,” she said.

Meralco had apparently scheduled brownouts in Cavite (Kawit, Imus) and Metro Manila (Caloocan, Las Piñas, Pasig, Tondo, Balintawak, Kamuning, Katipunan) from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. on today.

The morning brownouts did not push through, because the demand was low.

“There was a reduction in system demand probably because we made an advisory on air,” she said.

Power demand is usually low during Saturdays, Lomotan said.

The Department of Energy (DoE) said the yellow alert for the Luzon grid came as a result of the shutdown of three plants, the Calaca coal-fired power plant and the Sta. Rita and San Lorenzo natural gas-fired power plants.

Senators Slam $1-B Lending to the IMF

Senators criticized on Friday the government’s decision to lend $1 billion from its reserves to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), ostensibly to help other countries in need of funding, while the Philippines is not even financially well-off.

Malacañang had already defended the move, saying it was time for the Philippines to help other countries after having been a recipient of IMF assistance for the past 40 years.

“I’m not in favor (of lending to the IMF). We are a poor country pretending to be rich,” said Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III.

“Wala ngang makain ang mga mahihirap sa atin, magpapautang pa tayo (Why lend when our poor hardly eat)?” Sotto said.

Quite surprised over this development, Senate President Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada said “charity should begin at home.”

“Ang daming kulang sa mga silid aralan sa ating bansa. Ang daming kulang na tulay; ang daming nagugutom; madaming mga pulis at military na walang sariling bahay, tapos magpapautang tayo sa IMF para ipang-tulong sa mga mahihirap na bansa (Our classrooms are wanting. We have a big shortage in bridges; many are going hungry; so many of our police and soldiers don’t have housing, yet we will lend money to the IMF to help poor nations)?” Estrada asked.

He said corruption in the police and military establishments may be reduced if government solves their housing problems.

“Dapat unahin ng ating gobyerno ang pagresolba sa napakaraming problema ng bansa bago magpautang para makatulong sa ibang mga mahihirap na bansa (Government should resolve the many problems in the country before it attempts to lend money to the IMF for relending to poorer countries.),” said Estrada.

Philippines discusses China dispute with Myanmar

Philippine foreign secretary Albert del Rosario said he brought up the two-month long standoff in the South China Sea in his talks with visiting Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin in Manila.

"We discussed the West Philippine Sea issue, the peaceful resolution of the dispute in accordance with international law," del Rosario said, using the Philippine term for the South China Sea.
Del Rosario said he brought up the "code of conduct" that some Southeast Asian nations had been promoting to prevent conflict in the sea where several of them have conflicting territorial claims.

"Foreign Minister Lwin said they are looking at it (the proposed code) and we hope that they will consider it," he added.

The discussion came as Philippine and Chinese ships maintained their standoff over the Scarborough Shoal, an outcropping in the South China Sea which they both claim.

The dispute began after Chinese government vessels blocked Philippine ships from arresting Chinese fishermen at the shoal in April.

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, even waters close to the coasts of neighbouring countries while the Philippines says the shoal is well within its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone.

China and Myanmar are, however, close political and economic allies and Rangon backs Beijing's "one China policy" under which Taiwan is considered "an unalienable part of the Chinese territory".
