Congressman Singson Sentenced To 18m Imprisonment

Philippine Congressman Ronald Singson was sentenced by a Hong Kong judge to 18 months imprisonment for bringing cocaine into the southern Chinese territory intended for his own use.

Rep. Ronald Singson was caught with 0.24 ounces (6.67 grams) of cocaine last July while transiting through Hong Kong's airport en route to the gambling enclave of Macau. He pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking in a dangerous drug.

Under Hong Kong law, bringing drugs into the country can be defined as trafficking, in spite of the purpose. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of 5 million Hong Kong dollars ($640,000).

Prosecutors had challenged Singson's claim that the drugs were intended for his own consumption.

Alicia Mayer Bares All In New PETA Ad

Sexy Actress and Fashion Model Alicia Mayer has once again made evident over her involvement for animals by posing as a model of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Alicia posed naked for the new advertisement of the pro-vegetarian group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia. The poster, shot by photographer Raymund Isaac, displays Mayer lying naked on a gurney with the slogan, "Meat belongs in the morgue, not on your table. Go vegetarian!"

The shift is evidently a pace up from Mayer's prior attempt in 2007, when she posed wearing only a lettuce bikini.

"Hinahamon ko ang mga Pilipino na pag-isipan kung ano talaga ang karne," said she, explaining the message of the poster in an interview with GMA news. "Ang pagkain ng karne, manok at isda ay nangangahulugan ng pagkain ng bangkay ng isang pinahirapang hayop na hindi ninais ang kamatayan."

She encourage Filipinos follow her path of being a vegetarian.

PETA, in a statement, stated that the crusade is intended to prove their concern over the Filipinos' outwardly rising predilection for eating meat, citing previous research reports that greater than 750 million animals are being killed every day to serve the local community.

According to PETA, eating of meat is not only bad for animals but for as humans as well, noting its correlation through illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and stroke.

"The evidence is clear," said Jason Baker, PETA Asia's vice president of international operations. "The best thing that people can do for animals, the planet, and themselves is go vegetarian."
