Video Guide For The First Philippine Automated Elections

Here is a video from Youtube explaining how the Automated 2010 Philippine Elections will be implemented.

SOME YT Comments:
This is just another expense for the Government. There are a lot of things to consider when implementing this technology. My main concerns are: are voters ready or even aware of the processes? how fast can they fix if they will encounter technical issues? do they have enough staff to support such technology?...well...educating 100 people on how to use this is hard...what can you expect if its more than that.

What do you think guys? Is this the answer to an honest election?

No More Pacquiao vs Mayweather Fight

It looks like the megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will no longer push through as Mayweather’s chief adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, and negotiator, Richard Schaefer turned down Bob Arum's 'final counter offer'. Arum had given the Mayweather camp until Monday to decide on the final proposal that both parties let the Nevada State Athletic Commission to make the final decision on the blood tests issue.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Arum suggested that both sides explain to the NSAC why their “preferred (blood) testing system” should be used or followed, and let the Nevada body make the final decision.

Mayweather required an Olympic-style blood testing to be managed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Under the said agreement, both Manny and Floyd should agree to as many as five blood and 12 urine tests - randomly.

Freddie Roach said it’s so random that that USADA can knock on your doors in the middle of the night to get blood or urine samples, in the weeks, days or just hours before the fight, and shortly afterwards.

Pacquiao’s camp said there’s no need for such, and has agreed to three blood tests (one on the first week of January, then 30 days before the match and another after the match, but was again unacceptable to Mayweather.

Arum made the offer of letting the NSAC to decide. And if the Mayweathers does not accept the agreement, the Top Rank president said he could seal a Pacquiao fight with Paulie Malignaggi on March 13 “within an hour.”

Arum may find himself making the phone call when he wakes up Monday morning while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico after Ellerbe and Schaefer literally thumbed down the final counter offer from Top Rank.

Pacquiao is currently on vacation with his family in Gen. Santos City and his adviser, Mike Koncz, said the 31-year-old boxing superstar doesn’t want to make any further comment on the matter.

The other day, Schaefer said Mayweather can do away with the USADA, and it’s just a matter of both camps agreeing on the dates of the blood tests just to make sure that they’re still effective.

But that was the other day.

“We are prepared to have this handled in a way that is not us deciding or them deciding,” said Arum. “The commission meets on Jan. 19. Mayweather’s people can say why they believe additional testing above what we agreed to as necessary and we can give our viewpoint.

“Let the commission decide. If they come away and decide Manny needs to be blood tested every single [expletive] day, then we will go with that. This is the way to go to give this thing legitimacy. I hope they [Team Mayweather] see reason.”

Leptospirosis Philippines Outbreak - Death Toll at 89

The Department Of Health have declared an outbreak of leptospirosis in three barangays in Marikina as the death toll hit 89 cases. The three barangays are Tumana, Concepcion and Malanday. Secretary of Health, Francisco Duque III said the number of leptospirosis cases in public hospitals rose tremendously from 140 to 1027 between October 12 to 15.

The death toll from leptospirosis reached 89 as cases of the flood-borne disease in Metro Manila and flooded provinces rose tenfold in the past three days, the Department of Health (DOH) reported yesterday.

“Cases of leptospirosis have really shot up these past few days. In fact, the Metro Manila figure even exceeded the 812 nationwide admissions in government hospitals for the whole of last year,” Duque further added.

“As we start to see in the National Capital Region (NCR), we also expect a lot of cases in the communities in Rizal, which make up the biggest number of barangays still under water at this time,” Duque noted.

“Although fewer than five cases were recorded in each barangay, we declared an outbreak because those areas had zero incidence of the infection last year,” Duque said.

According to Secretary Duque, at least 1.7 million people are at risk of acquiring leptospirosis since many areas in Metro Manila and CALABARZON are still submerged. He further believed that at least 3000 cases will be infected by the disease.

“We expect 3,800 people to get the infection and of this number, 3,040 will suffer uncomplicated symptoms while the rest will manifest complicated symptoms that would require them to undergo dialysis or face eventual death,” Duque said.

In response of the DOH to prevent the increase of leptospirosis, the department is giving 100 mg prophylaxis capsule to people at risk. “For the next three weeks, we will be giving 100 mg. prophylaxis capsule once a week to those at risk of acquiring the infection,”.

Medical experts clarified that the prophylaxis would only protect the people for a week, thus they are encouraged to avoid wading in floodwaters, especially if they have an open wound.

Increase in Leptospirosis Disease in Flood Stricken Area

The Department of Health told the press that there is a total of almost 400 cases of leptospirosis in Metro Manila after two weeks that Ondoy has devasted the country

As of October 12, the Department of Health has recorded 383 cases in nine hospitals in Metro Manila.

These are the East Avenue Medical Center (69 cases), Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (1), Manila Doctor’s Hospital (10), The Medical City (70), National Kidney and Transplant Institute (28), Quirino Memorial Medical Center (18), Philippine General Hospital (17), Rizal Medical Center (13) and San Lazaro Hospital (157).

“We strongly advise anyone who has a history of wading in the recent floods and who has the symptoms of the disease to consult at once at the nearest doctor or health facility for treatment,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in an interview.

“This is a cause for concern since this surge in the number of cases reported by only nine Metro Manila hospitals already represents about half of last year’s annual figures,” the Secretary further added.

For the information of the general public here are some facts about leptospirosis from DHPE.org

Leptospirosis [lep-to-spy-RO-sis] is a potentially serious bacterial illness that is most common in the tropics. Leptospirosis can affect many parts of the body.
Infected wild and domestic animals pass leptospirosis-causing bacteria in their urine.

People get leptospirosis by contact with fresh water, wet soil, or vegetation that has been contaminated by the urine of infected animals.
Leptospirosis is treatable with antibiotics.
To prevent leptospirosis, minimize contact with fresh water and mud that might be contaminated with the urine of infected animals.

What is leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a potentially serious illness that can affect many parts of the body.

What is the infectious agent that causes leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira interrogans, a corkscrew-shaped bacterium (spirochete).

Where is leptospirosis found?

Leptospirosis-causing bacteria are common worldwide, especially in tropical countries with heavy rainfall. Infected rodents and other wild and domestic animals pass the bacteria in their urine. The bacteria can live for a long time in fresh water, damp soil, vegetation, and mud. Flooding after heavy rainfall helps spread the bacteria in the environment.

How is leptospirosis spread?

People get leptospirosis by contact with fresh water, damp soil, or vegetation contaminated by the urine of infected animals. People who canoe, raft, wade, or swim in contaminated lakes, rivers, and streams can get leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is also a problem for people who work in contaminated flood plains or wet agricultural settings.

Leptospirosis bacteria can enter the body through broken skin and mucous membranes. The bacteria can also enter the body when a person swallows contaminated food or water, including water swallowed during water sports. Once in the bloodstream, the bacteria can reach all parts of the body and cause signs and symptoms of illness.

What are the signs and symptoms of leptospirosis?

Most infected persons have a mild to moderate illness that is like many other tropical diseases. Symptoms include fever, headache, chills, nausea and vomiting, eye inflammation, and muscle aches. In more severe cases, the illness can result in liver damage and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), kidney failure, and internal bleeding. People who are seriously ill with leptospirosis often need to be hospitalized.

How soon after exposure do symptoms appear?

Symptoms usually begin about 10 days after infection.

How is leptospirosis diagnosed?

Leptospirosis is diagnosed by a special blood test that is available through state health departments.

Who is at risk for leptospirosis?
People who take part in freshwater recreational activities in areas where leptospirosis is common, especially during the rainy season or in times of flooding
Farmers, workers in rice fields, sewer workers, and others whose jobs involve contact with water or mud that is contaminated by animal urine, especially the urine of rodents Veterinarians and others in contact with leptospirosis-affected animals

What complications can result from leptospirosis?

Severe or untreated leptospirosis can lead to organ system damage and, in rare cases, death.

What is the treatment for leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is treatable with antibiotics. Treatment should be started as soon as possible. Severely ill persons might need intravenous antibiotic treatment and other supportive care.

How common is leptospirosis?

Mild leptospirosis is common in tropical countries where people have regular contact with fresh water and animals. The disease is under-diagnosed in the United States. The 50 to 150 cases reported each year are probably only a fraction of the total number of infections.

Is leptospirosis an emerging infectious disease?

Yes. Increased awareness of the disease has led to increased recognition. In 1995, after widespread flooding in Nicaragua, a leptospirosis epidemic killed at least 13 persons and made more than 2,000 others sick. In 1997, nine whitewater rafters from the United States were infected during a river trip in Costa Rica. Leptospirosis is also a problem in deteriorating inner cities that are infested with rats.

How can leptospirosis be prevented?

Minimize contact with fresh water, mud, and vegetation that might be contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rodents.
Wear protective clothing, such as waterproof boots or waders, when participating in recreational or work activities that might result in contact with contaminated water.

Imelda Marcos Shoe Collection Survived Ondoy

During the destruction of typhoon Ondoy, a museum guard’s acting quickly saved part of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos’s infamous shoe collection when huge floods devastated the nation’s capital.

In a report from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the staffs said that they moved the 200-pair of shoes displayed to the second floor before the flood waters started to enter into the ground floor of the Marikina Shoe Museum.

“A guard was able to take most of the pairs to the second floor. We will account for them in due time, but our priority right now is still the affected families,” it cited Mayor Marides Fernando of Marikina City during the interview.

Marikina City is the Philippines’ shoe production capital, was among the worst hit areas when Tropical Storm Ondoy (Ketsana) plunged record rains in and around Manila on Sept. 26, killing almost 300 people and thousands homeless.

Marcos’s shoe collection has become one of the most infamous symbols of the life of lavishness Imelda Marcos enjoyed during the 20-year reign of her husband, Ferdinand Marcos.

Blackhouts Hits Metro Manila

As the country struggles to rise from the devastation of storms “Ondoy” and “Pepeng,” Metro Manila and Rizal province are facing long power outages after a fire forced the shutdown of a power transformer in Taytay last Wednesday.

The rotating blackouts that the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) had hoped to end today are expected to drag on after three of its substations tripped “due to critical loading and in its attempt to shift load” to compensate for the shutdown of the Dolores substation of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

Meralco said the development “will result in longer duration of power outages in affected areas.”

Meralco, in a statement, said the three substations that conked out were Mandaluyong, Hillcrest and SM-Shangri-La.

“Both the NGCP and Meralco are doing everything to restore normal state of power,” the Meralco statement read. “We beg your indulgence for this inconvenience.”

Eleven cities and towns in eastern Metro Manila and Rizal province were subjected to rotating blackouts yesterday. Meralco had targeted to restore normal power today but its substations tripped.

The blackouts yesterday lasted three to four hours each twice a day in Makati, Marikina, Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan and parts of Quezon City, and Binangonan, Taytay, Angono, Cainta, and Antipolo City in Rizal.

DOLE to activate emergency employment program for Ondoy victims

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will set in place efforts to provide emergency wage employment to marginalized workers in areas hardest hit by Typhoon "Ondoy."

Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D. Roque ordered the immediate activation of the DOLE's emergency employment assistance program geared at providing short-term and emergency wage employment to severely affected workers, particularly those who lost their income and livelihood due to "Ondoy."

Roque said the emergency employment program intends to initially assist at least 1,450 workers in the National Capital Region (NCR), and Regions 3 (Central Luzon) and 4-A (Calabarzon). He said DOLE personnel in the three regions have been mobilized to identify target beneficiaries in the typhoon-damaged areas in the three regions in coordination with concerned local government units (LGUs).

The program which is usually being activated during trying times, targets to benefit 100 workers each in Marikina, Quezon City, Pasig, Pateros, and Taguig; 50 each in Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela in Camanava; and 50 each in Muntinlupa, San Juan, and Mandaluyong all in the NCR.

In Central Luzon, the program aims to assist 200 affected workers in Bulacan and another 100 in Pampanga. In Calabarzon, it seeks to help 150 affected workers in Cavite and another 100 affected workers in Rizal.

Roque said subsistence workers who lost their income and livelihood sources due to the calamity will be prioritized especially those whose properties were totally damaged and those formerly engaged in a particular craft or skill.

He said the program will provide the beneficiaries, through the LGUs, with emergency employment particularly in clearing and de-clogging operations and reconstruction efforts like the repairs of damaged infrastructure such as school buildings, daycare center, drainage, irrigation system, etc.

He added that the LGUs will identify the reconstruction projects where the target beneficiaries will be engaged into, adding they will be paid the minimum daily wage during the program's duration covering at least 15 days.

"It will serve as a bridging mechanism aimed at helping the beneficiaries cope while seeking to recover and regain their livelihood and income sources from the destruction brought about by "Ondoy." Roque said.

Over 33,000 people evacuated due to 'Pepeng (PARMA)'

Some 33,230 persons residing in the areas located in the path of Typhoon Pepeng have already been evacuated by the government as of 6 p.m. Friday, National Disaster Coordinating Council spokesman Lt. Col Ernesto Torres said.

Torres said the affected residents, who are from the "risk areas," have been moved to higher grounds to prevent any casualty.

Of the 33,220 persons, more than half or 19,587 are from Region 5 (Bicol region), which has started to experience rains and flooding in some places.

At least 2,497 are from Region 2 (Cagayan Valley); 6,485 are from Region 3 (Central Luzon); and 4,661 are from Region 4a (Calabarzon Region).

Torres said they expect the figure to increase as the pre-emptive evacuations continue.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo earlier ordered a preemptive and forced evacuation in anticipation of the onslaught of Typhoon Pepeng.

At around 9 am i was suppose to go to work at Sta Cruz Manila. I passed Aurora blvd coming from Broadway centrum. As I noticed tremedous rain and beginning flood, i decided to pull back and stay in SM Centerpoint until the rain stops..But it didn't... Contrary to what they did at Gotesco mall where they tried to let the people not to enter the mall because they said they are closing....The administration of SM allowed us to enter and stay inside the mall...They even allowed one of the moviehouse and the Hall of Bingo Bonanza as a resting place to prevent loittering and looting...Thanks to SM centerpoint.......Savior Mall

Noynoy Aquino Announces His Presidential Bid for 2010 Elections

Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has finally announced his presidential bid for the 2010 presidential election. During the press conference at Club Filipino in Grenhills, he said that he accepts the challenge by the Filipinos to push democratic reforms in the country.
"Tinatanggap ko ang hiling ng sambayanan. Tinatanggap ko rin po ang bilin at habilin, tagubilin ng aking mga magulang. Tinatanggap ko ang responsibilidad na ituloy ang laban para sa bayan. Tinatanggap ko ang hamong mamuno sa labang ito. Bayang Pilipinas, tatakbo ako sa pagka-pangulo sa darating na halalan," said Noynoy.

Club Filipino is a historic place to announce his presidential bid because this is also the place where his mother President Cory Aquino made her oath of Office as President of the Philippines.

As to who will be his running mate for the 2010 elections is yet to be confirmed. Noynoy said that he already offered the Vice Presidential bid to Senator Mar Roxas but he is still waiting the response from him.

Mar Roxas Gives Way to Noynoy Aquino for 2010

Presidential aspirant Senator Manuel Roxas II proclaimed his support to Cory Aquino's son Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III for the upcoming 2010 presidential election. Noynoy, however have not yet confirmed his decision for the presidential bid.

“Today, I’m announcing my support for the candidacy of Noynoy Aquino for president for 2010,” Roxas said in a televised press conference at the Club Filipino in San Juan, Metro Manila.

“Sa madaling salita, Noynoy has made it clear to me he wants to carry the torch of leadership,” he further added in his speech.

Roxas said that after several talks with Aquino, they came up with a decision that would help them pursue their “common dream” for change.

“Ito na ang pinakamabigat na desisyon sa buhay ko [This is the biggest decision I've made in my life],” said Roxas who already released several political advertisements ahead of the 2010 polls. He is also set to marry broadcaster Korina Sanchez in October.

“I do this for unity in support for change…if that means somebody has to make a sacrifice, ako na,” he said.

Senator Roxas have not yet clearly specified as to what will his plans for the upcoming election. Will he be the running mate of Noynoy as a Vice Presidential candidate or will seek re-election in the Senate?

The senator’s late father, former Senator Gerry Roxas, was a close friend and political ally of Aquino’s assassinated father, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. The older Roxas and Aquino almost went against each other for the 1972 presidential elections, which did not push through when then president Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.

Senator Francis 'Kiko' Pangilinan endorsed Senator Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III to be the standard bearer of the Liberal Party (LP) in the 2010 presidential elections. Senator Kiko said that he believes that Noynoy can unify the opposition block in the country.

Prior to the endorsement of Senator Kiko, the Aksyon Demokratiko said that they will support Noynoy to run in presidential race. Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio, another presidential aspirant and a priest, expressed that he will give way to Noynoy.

“Matapos mamatay at ilibing si dating Pangulong Aquino, nagbago na ang sitwasyon ng pulitika sa bansa at dapat kilalanin ng Liberal Party iyan,” told by Pangilinan in a radio interview with DWIZ.

Noynoy and Mar Roxas are scheduled to discuss as to who will run for the 2010 presidential election. Noynoy assures that whatever there decisions, it will not split the Liberal Party.

On the other hand, Mar Roxas said that he will heed his bid for president if it is the "will" of the people. “Ako naman po ay masunurin din. Nakikinig sa tao at nakikinig sa tawag ng panahon,”.

Mayon Volcano Set to Erupt - Alert Level 2

Philvocs has raised the level for Mayon Volcano to Alert Level “2" due to moderate unrest.

"This alert condition signifies a state of unrest which could lead to ash explosions or eventually to hazardous magmatic eruption. Thus, at Alert Level 2, Phivolcs strongly recommends that the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast flank of the volcano are off-limits due to the threat from sudden explosions and rockfalls from the upper slopes," it said on its website.

Provincial officials in Albay, Bicol have already mapped out evacuation plans, which also includes forced evacuation of residents living near volcano's periphery.

Cedric Daep, head of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO), said Governor Jose Salceda has also banned mountain-climbing activities on Mayon.

"Sa ngayon nag-issue si Governor ng advisory, pinagbawal ang mountain climbing. Bawal ang any human activity in critical areas sa 6-km permanent danger zone [The governor issued an advisory barring mountain-climbing. He also banned human activity in critical areas at the six-kilometer permanent danger zone]," Daep said in an interview on dzXL radio.

Daep mentioned that they had met with community leaders in high-risk zones to ask them to convince farmers not to sleep in areas near the permanent danger zone.

Blasts hit Mindanao again, 6 people dead, over 40 injured

MANILA, Philippines - Two separate bombings in Jolo and Iligan City on Tuesday morning killed six people and injured around 40 others, including state security personnel, officials said.

Philippine Marines commandant Maj. Gen. Ben Dolorfino said the first explosion occurred when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday in Poblacion village in front of the Go Teck Leng Hardware along Sanchez Street in Jolo.

Roughly three hours after the explosion in Jolo, another IED went off in Iligan City, wounding seven people including two soldiers, police said.

The blasts were the latest in a fresh wave of bombings in the volatile southern Philippines. A ranking military official, however, expressed doubts whether the incidents were related.

On Sunday morning, an improvised explosive device (IED) planted at a lechon (roasted pig) house in front of the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cotabato City, killing five people and injuring 29 others.

The night before, another blast caused by a 60-millimeter mortar explosive in Barangay Buayan in Datu Piang town in Maguindanao province injured three people.

Sulu blast

Superintendent Jose Bayani Gucela, a public information officer of the Philippine National Police (PNP) for Western Mindanao, said the IED was placed "inside" a motorcycle parked about 100 meters away from a Catholic church in downtown Jolo where a Mass was just held.

Gucela said investigators likewise recovered two unexploded IEDs, each placed in a cardboard box also around 100 meters away from the church.

According to Gucela, the blast killed six people and wounded about 40 others. A sketchy report from Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) operations chief Superintendent Danilo Bacas said a policeman was among those hurt in the explosion.

Bacas said the Sulu cathedral is located across the street where the explosion occurred. "Nasa kabilang kalye po ang simbahan [pero] medyo malayo [The cathedral is located across the street but it is somewhat far (from the blast site)]."

Philippine Navy spokesperson Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said most of the wounded victims in the Jolo blast were in critical condition.

"Our initial report showed that a motorcycle parked near the store allegedly with wire connected on it was noticed, prompting concerned citizens to report the sightings to the police. An explosion followed just as policemen were responding to the information," Arevalo said in a text message to reporters.

Another in Iligan City

Northern Mindanao police director Chief Superintendent Danilo Empedrad said the Iligan City blast occurred at 10:50 a.m. along Sabayle Street near the city pier.

Initial reports said the IED was placed inside a vehicle parked right beside a mini-cruiser belonging to the Philippine Army, Empedrad said.

First A(H1N1) Related Death In The Philippines

The Philippines confirms its initial A(H1N1) virus related death — 49-year-old woman who died from congestive heart failure but who also tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus.

This is the second recorded death in the Asia-Pacific region related to A(H1N1), following the death of a man in Australia on Friday.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the 49-year old female who is known to have a pre-existing chronic heart disease was also found to be positive for A (H1N1). He said that the patient presented with flu-like symptoms starting on June 17 consisting of dry cough, fever and chills and difficulty of breathing just before death on June 19.

“Given the available information, we cannot conclude that the death is due to A (H1N1). But in other countries which have reported A (H1N1) deaths, majority have pre-existing medical conditions. We condole with the family of the patient as we mourn her untimely death,’ Duque said.

Because of this first reported case of death in a patient with an incidental finding of A (H1N1) in the country, Duque said that the Department of Health will be more aggressive in targeting segments of patients with a high vulnerability to fatal flu complications saying that they should be the ones receiving the most care and attention by healthcare professionals.

“We want to make it clear that high-risk groups, once they have the flu symptoms, should immediately go to their doctor. They should not wait for their symptoms to worsen because they are prone to many infections other than the novel virus such as our seasonal flu strains. These are patients with uncontrolled diabetes, frank cardiovascular disease, COPD, organ transplant recipients, those who are immunocompromised, those with chronic liver and kidney disease, people suffering from other infections like HIV/AIDs and TB, pregnant women and the very young and the elderly,” Duque clarified.

Currently, the DOH is revising the interim guidelines in managing and treating A (H1N1) cases to guarantee that vulnerable populations are prioritised and receive immediately the appropriate modicum of care. This is in accordance with the Pandemic Alert Level 6 declaration of the World Health Organization which recommends to its member states to focus on managing cases, especially severe ones, rather than containment to prevent the spread of the virus.

“We would like to reemphasize that, globally and locally, the overwhelming majority of cases only experience mild symptoms and, eventually, make a rapid and full recovery, often even without any form of medical intervention,” Duque stressed.

“It is prudent for parents to seek professional care for children with rapid breathing, excessive drowsiness or dehydration. In adults, chest pain, prolonged fever or labored breathing should prompt warnings to see a doctor,” Duque reminded the public.

“We need to make sure that our resources are efficiently used and that they will give us the best outcomes by targeting people who are at risk for developing complications,’ Duque said. Meanwhile, Duque advised the public to continue heeding the recommendations of the DOH on proper handwashing, cough etiquette, and other hygiene practices.

“The best defense against A (H1N1) and other diseases is to boost your immune system. Most people can fight off this virus without special medications or hospitalization. You can stay at home and take supportive care like plenty of fluids, vitamins and bed rest,” Duque stressed.

Duque also disclosed that 35 more have fully recovered from the novel virus, thus bringing the total count of those who have fully recovered to 374. This number constitutes 84% of the total confirmed cases reported since May 21.

Duque also said that there are 17 more confirmed cases recorded today. These additional patients bring the total sum of confirmed cases to 445.

The new 17 cases involved 8 males and 9 females. The age range of these cases is 11-58 years old, with 19 as median age. Duque noted that 15 of these cases are Filipinos, while the remaining 2 are foreigners. He added that of 3 of these 17 cases have travelled to a country affected with A (H1N1). On the other hand, as of June 19, the World Health Organization reported 44,287 cases with 180 deaths from 90 reporting countries.

Adamson Suspends Classes Due To A(H1N1)

Adamson University suspended its classes until June 24 after a student was confirmed with A(H1N1) virus. This is the first case of A(H1N1) in the said university.

In a related news, the Department of Health has recorded 36 new patients infected by the virus. Health Secretary Duque told that the new cases was mild in nature.

The new 36 mild confirmed cases involved 15 males and 21 females. The age range is 2-59 years old, with 17 as median age.

Duque noted that 34 of the cases are Filipinos, while the remaining two are foreigners. He added that 6 of the new cases have a history of travel to a country affected with the novel virus.

Duque said that all of these new patients are responding positively to their treatments.

Duque continued to remind the public that the simplest ways to avoid getting the flu are to wash hands thoroughly and to cover mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, respectively.

Meanwhile, as of June 19, the World Health Organization reported 44,287 cases with 180 deaths from 90 reporting countries.

Flu Vaccines Running Out Due To AH1N1 Scare

Officials of Sanofi-Pasteur Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in the Philippines said in an interview with GMA 7 reported that there stock of flu vaccines had been running out. More people a getting flu vaccines believing that it can prevent them from getting the Influenza A(H1N1) virus.

Rio Buquid, a key account specialist of the pharmaceutical firm, told that in comparison of the previous years, the demand for flu vaccinces have increased dramatically. The increase in demand has been attributed to virus scare of Influenza A(H1N1).

Buquid said Sanofi-Pasteur is trying to get affiliates from other sources in providing supplemental stocks of the vaccine to the Philippines. Presently the has the highest number of A(H1N1) cases in Southeast Asia.

Dr. Yolanda Oliveros, director of the Department of Health's National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said she has also received reports of flu vaccine stocks running out.

She said there was nothing wrong with more people wanting to get flu shots, but she cautioned the public against having a "false sense of protection against A(H1N1) because these vaccines do not give that."

Dr. Oliveros told that the vaccines presently available in the market just protect people from regular seasonal flu and not the A(H1N1) virus. However, she said the increased demand for flu vaccines – which does not prevent A(H1N1) infection in the first place – could still help prevent the flu scare from getting worse.

For one, more people getting flu shots would prevent “re-assortment," which happens when the A(H1N1) virus mutates. Buquid explained that when the A(H1N1) virus gets in contact with a person who is already sick with seasonal flu, it could produce yet another new strain.

“The A(H1N1) could still form new hybrids," she further added.

Buquid said the A(H1N1) virus is itself a hybrid that was formed when a regular swine flu virus got mixed with the seasonal flu virus of humans. She quoted experts as saying that the A(H1N1) virus could have originated from a person who was already suffering from the regular human flu.

“Kasi kung wala namang flu ang tao, hindi mare-recognize ng katawan niya ang flu virus na galing sa baboy [The virus could have only mutated in a person already suffering from flu]," Buquid said.

In a way, the increasing demand for flu vaccines has helped the government because the number of people stricken by flu has gone down, Oliveros said.

“The burden on our health system is reduced. Not so many people go to facilities because many are already protected," said Oliveros. With fewer flu patients, the government can maximize its health resources, she added.

As of Friday, the Philippine tally of A(H1N1) cases has remained locked at 344, with 262 patients fully recovered. Some schools have decided to go into a 10-day class suspension, while most have already gone back to their regular calendar.

The AH1N1 cases in the Philippines have increased from 43 to 46 according to Department of Health (DOH). The new cases includes 4 students from Dela Salle University in Taft making a total of 7 cases of infected students. Far Eastern University-East Asia College have also confirmed that they have one student who is infected by the virus.

“We have reached 46 and although it’s a big number we are fortunate that all of these are just mild cases which are consistent with most of the cases of A(H1N1) we are seeing in other affected countries,” said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III during the press conference.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) have postpone the opening of classes in Colleges and Universities. The school opening is moved to June 15. Former Priest to Run for Presidency in 2010

Former priest and now the Governor of Pampanga, Ed Panlilio have already confirmed that he will be running for President in the May 2010 elections.

In a press conference, he said that he will making his own party instead of joining existing one because both the administration and opposition party have their own vested self interest.

He further added that change is needed by the Philippines if the Filipinos wanted growth. Lastly he mentioned that the only thing that is limiting him to bid for presidency is political machinery.

In my opinion:
Political machinery will play a vital role in the candidacy of any presidentiables. Candidates are "carried" by their local counterparts. Without support from below it will a hard time vouching for the highest position in the land.

Among Ed, as he is popularly known, have already have a secret machinery waiting to be tapped: "the catholics". If he could aligned his political ambitions towards from the perspective of each and every Sunday mass goer, it can be a backbone of his way Malacanang.

The Philippine Lotto 6/49 draw tonight will be having an estimate of 88 million pesos jackpot or even greater since a lot of people are already lining up to lotto outlets. Nobody won in last 13 draw that is why the pot has become bigger.

According to Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) there are now about 1300 persons that have become millionaires from lotto draws and 24th time that the jackpot have reached more than a hundred million.

Better line-up now. Mahaba na pila mamya.

Hmm I wonder what will I do with the 88 million. :-)

Manny Pacquiao to run for Congressman

Yup. You heard it right IBO Light weltherweight title holder, Manny Pacquiao will be running again for Congressman. This time he will be running at Saranggani province and not in General Santos City where he was completely knockout via a landslide victory of his opponent: Congresswoman Darlene Antonino-Custodio. Custodio got 139,061 votes over Pacquiao’s 75,908 vote.

In preparation for his entry into politics, he have formed a political party named People's Champ Movement where he is the president of the party. Presently, there are still no political figures that expressed their willingness to join Manny but other may join him as the election goes nearer.

Manny was also named as Ambassador of Peace and Understanding by President Gloria Arroyo for uniting the Filipinos during his boxing fights. The Philippine National Police has posted zero crime rate during Manny's boxing events. Moreover, Manny was appointed as Special assistant to the secretary of Justice Raul Gonzales. He will act as a consultant in its intelligence affairs.

In my opinion:

Although Manny Pacquiao still lacks political experience, I think it is about time for Filipinos to give him a chance to serve the country.

He has a good heart and it can be attested by the people that surrounds him.
Manny is rooted to his past. He does not forget where he came from and the pains he underwent.
Respect. Eventhough he knew he can beat his opponents he never brags about it and respects their defeats.
Lastly, Manny can serve as an inspiration to millions of Filipinos.

Besides being a billionaire already will lessen him of becoming a corrupt official.

More power Manny!

Dingdong as Cholo of Stairway to Heaven

In my previous blog about Marian Rivera as being the new Darna, I asked what will be the project for Dingdong Dantes. Well, here is the answer to that question. Dingdong will be playing as Cholo in a Korea Novela "Stairway To Heaven". This is one of the top-raters of GMA-7 and is also one of my all-time favorites.

In an interview with GMA-7 he said that he was surprised when the announcement was made by Mr. Felipe Gozon during the airing of SOP.

"Hindi ko alam yun, e. Ang alam ko lang, may number. So, noong nakita kong may VTR pa, sabi ko, 'Hindi ko naman birthday, bakit may ganito?' So, yun nga, may ganoon pala," Dingdong said in an interview.

Now another big question pop up... who will play the part of Jodie? Maganda sana si Marian kaya lang she already has a project as Darna. Well I just hope whoever will be chosen to portay Jodie will be well suited for the role.

I guess this will also be the sign that Marian-Dingdong love team will be out for awhile.

Martin Nievera Sorry

Here is the official statement of Martin Nievera with regards to the singing of the national anthem controversy.

“About 3 months ago I was asked by our champion Manny Pacquiao to sing the national anthem in his fight with Ricky Hatton. Iaccepted whole-heartedly. This would be my first time to be blessed with the honor of martin nieverarepresenting my country and singing our national anthem infront of the world. It was then my plan to make my moment of honor not about me or anything showbiz.

“Instead I wanted to stand center ring as nothing else but a proud Filipino singing his anthem, wanting every word and emotion behind each word to reach not just the cheap seats at the very top of the arena, but heard, felt and understood even in the non-Tagalog speaking countries all over the world. Music is the universal language, so I knew if I arranged it and performed it convincingly I could make our anthem understood even though it was the only anthem that night that was not in English. I could have just gone thru the motions of singing it over, but no, I wanted to represent and communicate.

“So with all my heart and love for the country I was so proud to represent as well as the fighter I opened for, I sang the anthem the way I did. If I were to tell you in a soft voice, in perfect time and pitch as dictated by history, ‘Ang Mamatay Nang Dahil Sa ‘Yo’ would you believe me? But if I made sure I said the line with conviction and volume enough to heard over thousands of screams then would you believe me better?

“I cannot apologize for the way I sang it because no one told me the rules nor the laws in years past. Didn’t hear about any of these so-called laws when the others before me sang their versions. I didn’t get the memo. I will not apologize for giving my all just to sing that song infront of the world. But I do apologize ONLY to the people afraid of progress and change, of course to the lawmakers and to whom ever else took offense to my interpretation of probably the most beautiful song I have ever come across. And to everyone else, God bless your open mind and open heart.

“Still a proud Filipino, Martin Nievera”

source:http://www.stir.ph/LM/articles~level2/id-1241751461802_1/ai-null/Martin_apologizes.html

My Opinion:
Did martin really violated a law by singing his own rendition of the anthem? Yes because its relatively different the original "form" by Julian Felipe and by law we should not alter it. However this raises questions is it immoral singing a different rendition of the song. Definitely not. Martin sang the song in a manner he pour his heart out. He interpreted it in the context he believes it can serve as an inspiration for every Filipinos to be proud of.

Does singing a different rendition of the song lessen our nationalism and rootedness to our past? Again, NO. We should connect to our past by the 'way' of our present time. Making different musical arrangements may even awaken the sleeping nationalism of Filipinos.

Get out of the box kapwa pinoy! :-)

Tropical Storm "Emong" has entered Philippines

If you are planning for a summer vacation, you may want to postponed it and re-scheduled it on a later date. A Tropical Storm has entered the Philippine area of responsibility, according to National Disaster Coordination Council (NDCC) Deputy Administrator Anthony Golez said Wednesday night.

Tropical Storm "Emong" has entered the Philippines about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), Emong has a maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour with gustiness of 150 kph.

In a related news, the Makati government has canceled its grand parade plans this Friday as part of its anniversary celebration due to bad weather. According to their website, a new announcement will be made on schedules for the Grand Parade, Chalk Art and Brass Band Competition. For more information you can visit their website at makati.gov.ph

In my opinion:
Hmmm... I wonder if Team Pacquiao will push through with their parade this coming Friday. Rains during summer? Is this a clear sign of global climate change? Will this mean that we are going to have summer in the months of September-December?Ngakk... kawawa naman yung mga farmers, mahihirapang mag-forecast the best time to plant the seedlings.

Marian Rivera as DARNA

It's already official Marian Rivera will play the role of Darna at GMA 7's TV Series. Marian was surprised when she was called by Ms. Wilma Galvante to discuss what will be her next project after "Ang Babaing Hinugot sa aking Tadyang". Unknowingly, a surprise is already waiting for her in the room with matching confetti and a banner announcing her a the new DARNA.

Also present in the surpirse announcement were Anette Gozon-Abrogar, Ruby Ravelo-Austria and Zaldy Ravelo (siblings of Mars Ravelo), and some of the executives of GMA 7.

“Sabi ko na nga ba, eh! Kapag ganyang minadali ako ni Momsy (tawag nito sa manager niyang si Popoy Caritativo) alam ko merong sorpresa na naman ito sa akin,” exclaimed Marian during the interview.

Wilma Galvante told reporters that they unanimously agreed that Marian is the best bet to play the role of DARNA.

Hmmm. anu naman kaya ang magiging project ni Dingdong will he be included in the TV series or will he have another TV series on his own.

Prudential Life Dealers License Revoked

Planholders of Prudential Life flocked their office asking for refunds as soon as they learned from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that the company's dealers license have been revoked.

However, SEC Chairwoman Fe Barin clarifies that SEC only terminates Prudential Life from selling of new plans to the public. In an interview with dzXL radio she said: " Ang pagkaka-revoke ng dealer’s license nangangahulugang wala silang lisensya na magbenta. Ang lahat na preneed companies kailangan registered bago makapagbenta ng plan. Hihinto sila sa pagbebenta. Yung iniisip ng ating kababayan mag-worry kung ano ang mangyayari sa binili nila natural lang yan. Una, ang fully paid na patuloy ang pag-avail at seserbisyuhan ng Prudential,"

When asked as to why the Prudential Life's licensed have been revoked: "May kakulangan ang kanilang trust fund sa pangmahabang panahon pero sa kasalukuyan liquid pa sila at meron silang isasagot sa mga sumisingil [They have potential problems with their trust fund in the long term. But at present they are liquid and they can afford to service existing preneed plans]," she answered.

“Hindi dahil na-revoke ang license nila ang kakulangan wala na, i-enforce pa yan ... Yan ang inaagapan naming kaya namin ni-revoke ang dealer’s license ... patuloy naming ine-examine yan," she added.

In My Opinion:
It is about time that the government starts to protect the public from these kind of crisis to further minimized the losses of ordinary income earners. Marami ring naging biktima ang CAP and Pacific Plans wherein a lot planholders vision's a bright future for them and their children but when the time came to received the money, the pre-need companies can no longer give their commitments.

Ted Failon's Wife Committed Suicide

The wife of TV newscaster, Ted Failon, was found dead at the comfort room of their residence in Quezon City. It was apparently assumed that his wife, Trinidad Arteche Etong, committed suicide but the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) thinks otherwise considering another view of the incident.

The ABS-CBN network has appeal to the public to respect the privacy of Ted Failon and his family. "We appeal to everyone to please respect the privacy of Ted Failon and his family. His wife is fighting for her life." a statement released by Mr. Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN corporate communications.

Initial investigation from the QCPD states the following:
1. Trinidad shot herself inside the comfort room of their daughters room.
2. Upon opening the CR, the .38 caliber was found at the right side of the victim.
3. According to New Era Hospital, the point of entry of the bullet was from the left side going to the right side.
4. The crime scene was "clean" by the housemaids before the police arrives. However, the housemaids cleaned the CR based on their own initiative.
5. Ted Failon saw a suicide note from his wife stating: "“Papa, I’m so sorry, gustong gusto kung magsabi sa u ng totoo, pero hindi ko pa alam kung papano ko uumpisahan, sobrang takot na takot po ako, umalis po muna ako kasi hindi ko po kaya at nahihiya po ako sa iyo”.

As of press time, Ted Failon together with his daughter is at the New Era Hospital after he being investigated by the police and undergoing paraffin test.

Imelda Marcos as one of Newsweek's Greediest

Former First Lady Imelda Marcos is included in Newsweeks' Greediest Of All Time together with Marcus Licinius Crassus, Genghis Khan, Pope Sixtus IV, William Vanderbilt, Willam Tweed, Empress Dowager Cixi, Charles Ponzi, Ivan Boesky, Dennis Kozlowski, and Bernard Madoff.

“[Imelda Marcos] saw it as her duty to provide ‘some kind of light, a star’ for the impoverished Filipino people over whom her husband presided," the Newsweek article wrote of the wife of the late Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos.

“She took $5 million shopping sprees to New York and Rome, reportedly owned the world’s largest collection of gems and 3,000 pairs of shoes," it further read.

In an television interview from GMA7, Imelda Marcos defend herself by stating

I plead guilty. For me, greedy is giving. I was first lady for 20 years, you have to be greedy first to give to all. It is natural. The only things we keep in life are those we give away.

Well, so much so for her defense. You can view the interview here.

IMHO: Perhaps Ms. Imelda was planning to build a museum for the shoes that she had acquired. Sadly to say that Filipinos was just able to glance at her "treasures" after the Marcos Regime was ousted.

In fairness to Ms. Imelda, I think that we need also to give credit to the goodness that she had done for the country (although the bad outweighs the good) like... hmmm let me think and try to get back on that. :-)

By the way here is a youtube video showing the shoes of Imelda Marcos.

PRC (Professional Regulation Commission) Website DEFACED

Yesterday about 10:00 pm, the website of Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) was defaced showing a message from the hackers: "Hacked by linuXploit_crew =) by DeRf-, Hualdo and _serial_killer_," As of this time the PRC's website is still inaccessible.

A website defacement is an attack on a website that changes the visual appearance of the site. These are typically the work of system crackers, who break into a web server and replace the hosted website with one of their own.

A message is often left on the webpage stating his or her pseudonym and the output from "uname -a" and the "id" command along with "shout outs" to his or her friends. Sometimes the Defacer makes fun of the system administrator for failing to maintain server security. Most times the defacement is harmless, however, it can sometimes be used as a distraction to cover up more sinister actions such as uploading malware.

A high-profile website defacement was carried out on the website of the company SCO Group following its assertion that Linux contained stolen code. The title of the page was changed from "Red Hat vs SCO" to "SCO vs World," with various satirical content following.

Maybe this is in response by the hackers to the government's statement that they are tightening the IT security among its servers. Following the report that hackers from ghost network where able to breach into some of the computers of Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

What is this incident telling us? We need to tightened our IT vulnerabilities and the government needs to be serious about this. To my knowledge this is the third site of the Philippine government that was defaced and "security holes" may still be left opened in other web sites.

Moreover, this incident makes me ask: how secure is the COMELEC's computers to be used in automating the polls? If hackers where able to breach into the gov system, we just hope that the COMELEC's computers is secure enough to for us to have clean 2010 election.

Vic Sotto to host TV5 "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"

Apparently this news came from yehey.com website stating that it is confirmed that Vic Sotto will be hosting TV5 new game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". The show is intended to replaced Gretchen Barreto's "You and Me against the World" that suffer heavy losses due to low ratings and low commercial load.

Although there are still no confirmation yet from Vic Sotto, this will be his first television show that he will be doing that is not produced by T.A.P.E.

Hmmm... Magiging bagay kaya Bossing Vic na maging host ng Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

The last time that the show was shown on Philippine Television, it was hosted by Christopher De Leon aired at Channel 13. The show also produced great results in tv ratings and proves to be one of the best game show.

Here's a previous episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire:

Pede nga siguro si Boss Vic mag-host hawig sila ni Boyet De Leon.
